What is YAG?
The YAG is open for 14-21 year olds who want to make the Museum relevant to young people through organising events and workshops, acting as Museum consultants, going behind the scenes to explore the Museum and sharing their ideas with others. The YAG is a great opportunity for young people to get involved in their local community, learn new skills in a professional setting, build their confidence by taking part and having a voice and be creative.

Who are the Youth Advisors?
At present, our Youth Advisors are from all different backgrounds and with interests in history, politics, science, finance, sports and art. We welcome any young people that want to add something new and different to their record of achievement and CV.

What opportunities are available?
Now is an exciting time to get involved here at the Royal Museums Greenwich (which encompasses Royal Observatory Greenwich, Cutty Sark and the Queen’s House in addition to National Maritime Museum). There is a new learning space being made in the Museum and we are the first group to be invited to learn and generarate new conversations about how to use the Museum, how links are made between Yinka Shonibare’s Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle and the Museum’s collection. We’ll be working with an artist and it will lead up to us taking over this new space for Takeover Day in November.  The YAG is making a difference to the Museum today and also the way it will be experienced in the future.

How much commitment is required?
The YAG meets informally once a month outside of school hours, with opportunities to take on more responsibilities during school holidays to gain extra experiences. We usually meet on a Saturday or Sunday, but in holidays we may meet on weekdays. You do your best to come but studies come first so not to worry if you can’t make it.

What is the Recruitment Day?
This is a chance to come along, meet some of the Youth Advisors and find out more about upcoming opportunities and see if YAG is for you. You don't need to have any qualifications or experience in museums, you just need to be a team worker, be willing to share your ideas and willing to take part and learn!

Youth Advisor Bryn shares what we did in today's meeting...

We started out by just going over takeover day; how it went, how we felt about it and that sort of thing. Overall, we all agreed that we thought the takeover day had been a big success. We then quickly went over what we might do in the coming year, including a possible summer program that would be run by us! Later on, we went over the characteristics that we thought a museum should have, and what defined a museum. Finally, we took a look at one of the museum's prized exhibits; the coat that Nelson wore when he was shot. 

We tried out some new games to explore what a museum is and what it does. We'll have the chance to explore this a bit more in the future...

Being able to take part in exciting exhibitions with in the museum, such as the exhibition in  the compass lounge, Traders Remixed   Describe the Youth Advisory Group in 3 words:  Exciting, amazing and friendly   Favourite thing about National Maritime Museum:  Being able to be part of the museum itself   Why should other people join the Youth Advisory Group? Other young people should join he youth advisory group, because it gives them a chance to work closely with the Museum and meet new people the same age    What do you want to do in the future and is being a Youth Advisor helping you get there?  I want to become a professional web designer, and the youth advisory group has helped me build up my confidence

Iwant to be a dentist , and youth advisory is definitely helping because I'm more sociable now and it would help me when dealing with my clients in future

Name: Satpal Singh Bansal  Age: 18   How long have you been a Youth Advisor for? Just over a year - joined in 2011   Your highlight as a Youth Advisor? Being able to make something that can not only benefit us but others in our community   Describe the Youth Advisory Group in 3 words: Friendly, Diverse and Fun   Favourite thing about National Maritime Museum: The collections held within the Archives, we are able to see and touch items that were linked to events that have made history, such as an autographed  piece from the night of the Titanic disaster   Why should other people join the Youth Advisory Group? We are a fun and friendly group to be a part of. Not only does the Youth Advisory Group offer educational values for young people to make a positive change within the Museum, it is able to provide experience working within a group, project managing and able to communicate with a variety of different people such as curators and the public   Satpal, Alexa, Jenelle, Adrian and Danielle with National Maritime Museum's Director, Kevin Fewster. This was at the launch of the Youth Advisors' first exhibition, Traders Remixed in February 2012     What do you want to do in the future and is being a Youth Advisor helping you get there? I would like to become a solicitor. Being part of YAG has allowed me to gain confidence when communicating with new and interesting people as well as sticking to deadlines throughout projects
