YAG Workshop, Saturday 28 September 2013

Today we tried out some new games to see what could work for the Recruitment Day we are having in October. We started with Fast Friends, where we each wrote a question on a piece of paper and then all got in pairs and Shauna read out a question for us to discuss for a minute, such as what are you hoping to get for Christmas, or what kind of animal would you like to be?

After this, we practised some other games such as Ninja Squirrel and Splat. We thought about our aims for the Recruitment Day:
  • For new people to join YAG and get involved on the day
  • Let people know what YAG is and how they can contribute
  • Let people know about past and future activities
  • Make the day very open so that people can bring their friends and it is a sociable opportunity
  • Have fun in an energetic atmosphere
We then met with the Museum's new artist in residence, Maria Amidu, who we are working with on our next project. Maria is inspired by Yinka Shonibare's Nelson's Ship in a Bottle and is thinking about the words that relate to the artwork. These words depend on your personal interest and will vary on what you think the artwork means. Maria is very interested in the glass, so she researched other glass items in the collection and the search has taken her on a journey that is very unique to her. We will take part in our own journeys to find personal and meaningful links to this artwork and to new and unexpected items in the Museum's collection.

We visited the new Re:Think space in the Gallery, which will be the start of these conversations. It is quite empty now, but next year it will be filled with interactive and fun ways to explore Shonibare's artwork

We loved the carpet!

When we went back to the Briefing Space, we planned out the Recruitment Day - it looks like a fun 2 1/2 hours :-)

Next time we meet it will be Recruitment Day on Saturday 19 October.
